4 Reasons Humans Have Slept on Flax for 8,000 Years

A 19th-century hospital ward dressed in white linen

The Fabric of Hospitals

For centuries, hospital beds were dressed in linen — naturally antimicrobial, breathable, and the cleanest cloth available. Then synthetics arrived, because plastic was cheaper to launder.

Fine linen hanging in an ancient Egyptian temple

Older Than Cotton. Older Than Silk.

Egypt wove it for its temples. Europe passed it down through daughters. Flax has dressed human beds for eight thousand years — cotton is a newcomer by comparison.

Linen sheets billowing on a line in a flax field

Cool In Summer. Warm In Winter.

Hollow flax fibre lets heat pass straight through and lifts moisture off your skin. One set of sheets, every season — no swapping the bed twice a year.

Well-worn linen lifted from the water in an old wash house

Softer Every Wash

Cotton thins. Polyester pills. Linen does the opposite — every wash breaks the fibre in further, so year ten is softer than day one.

Humans didn't sleep on plastic. They slept on flax.

Then we swapped it. Polyester, microfibre, "performance" blends — cheaper to make, easier to ship, and unable to breathe.

We wrapped ourselves in petroleum eight hours a night and spent fifty years wondering why we wake up hot.

Linvea is the swap back.

Pure European flax, nothing blended in. It breathes. It lifts moisture off your skin. It gets softer every wash instead of thinner.

Flax is harvested once a year and the finest fibre comes from one narrow belt of northern Europe.

Restocking isn't weeks. It's seasons.

What Our Customers Say

Loved by 10,000+ Sleepers

★★★★★

Sleeping better than ever

“I'm the person who sweats out a lake and then gets cold. Fan on, one leg out, up at 2am every single night. Three weeks on these and I'm not waking up drenched anymore. My husband said last week I've stopped throwing the covers at him.”

Danielle R. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

Seven years of waking up damp

“Every night for about seven years my perimenopausal body has woken me up soaked. These don't stop the hot flashes, nothing does, but the sheets dry so much faster that I fall back asleep instead of lying there freezing in a wet bed. That's the whole difference for me.”

Karen M. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

My husband was the skeptic

“He insisted cotton was better and rolled his eyes when the box came. He's basically a human radiator, sleeps on top of the covers half the year. Two weeks later he told me not to buy any other sheets ever again. I'm still not over it.”

Priya N. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

My skin finally calmed down

“My skin reacts to everything — cotton, polyester, even the expensive ‘premium’ blends. These are the first sheets I haven't woken up itchy in. No redness in the morning, no sticky feeling on the backs of my legs. I ordered a second set the same week.”

Rachel T. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

Like a five-star hotel at home

“I honestly thought all sheets were more or less the same. Then I got these. Cool and crisp the way good hotel bedding is, and they've gone softer with every wash instead of pilling like my old set did after two months. Getting into bed is now my favourite part of the day.”

Sofia L. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

Give them ten washes

“Fair warning, night one they've got texture. I nearly panicked. By about the fifth wash they'd loosened right up and now they're softer than anything else in the house. I've read that's just what real linen does, and it's true. Don't judge them the first night.”

Megan H. Verified Buyer

★★★★★

No more manmade garbage

“I've been slowly getting the plastic out of our house and the bedding was the last thing left. Microfiber, polyester, all of it is just petroleum. These are actual flax, there's a label sewn in, and you can feel the difference the second you get in. Wish I'd done it years ago.”

How It's Made

Four steps that make our linen
actually different.

Most “linen” sold today is blended with polyester and softened with chemicals, which strips out everything flax is good for. We do it the old way — because the process is what makes the fabric.

Flax in bloom on a coastal plain
01

Grown, not manufactured

Our flax grows for 100 days in the coastal belt of northern Europe, where damp air and cool sun strengthen every fibre from root to tip.

Flax pulled from the ground with its roots intact
02

Pulled, never cut

The whole plant is pulled from the ground rather than cut at the stem. That keeps the fibres long and unbroken — the reason real linen lasts decades instead of years.

Flax laid in rows to ret in the field
03

Retted by dew and rain

The stalks are left in the field for weeks while dew and rain break them down naturally. No chemical bath. The fibre stays hollow, alive and breathable.

04

Stonewashed, never softened

No chemical softeners, no resin, no coating. The softness is worked into the cloth by finishing alone — which is why it keeps softening instead of washing out.

Frequently asked questions

Is linen scratchy at first?

It's textured — and we'd rather tell you that now than have you discover it at bedtime. Real flax has body to it on the first night. That's the fibre, not a flaw.

Then it starts to give. By the tenth wash it's noticeably softer, and it keeps going for years — long after cotton has gone thin and started to pill. Every night you sleep on it, it improves. Anything that feels buttery straight out of the packethas been softened with chemicals that wash out — and take the breathability with them.

Does it wrinkle?

Yes. Beautifully.

The soft rumple is how you know it's flax — if a sheet stays flat and crisp, something synthetic is holding it there. Don't iron it. Pull it from the dryer while it's still slightly damp, put it straight on the bed, and it settles into that lived-in look on its own.

Do linen sheets shrink?

Ours have already done it. Every piece is stonewashed at the mill, so the shrinkage happens before it reaches you — and we cut our sizes to the finished dimensions, not the pre-wash ones.

Expect a little settling in the first wash. Wash warm rather than hot, dry on low, and it stays true to size.

Can I machine wash them?

Yes — that's the point. Machine wash cold or warm at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a mild liquid detergent, and use less than you think. Tumble dry low and take them out while slightly damp.

Never use fabric softener. It coats the flax in a waxy film that blocks the breathability you paid for and stops the linen softening naturally. Skip the bleach too. Give the load room to move — linen doesn't like being crammed.

How often should I wash them?

Once a week or so, like any bedding. Flax is naturallymoisture-wicking and odour-resistant, so it stays fresher between washes than cotton does — and unlike almost everything else you own, washing makes it better, not worse.

Is it really 100% linen?

Yes — and we'll prove it rather than ask you to trust us. Every piece carries a sewn-in composition label reading 100% Linen (Flax), and the OEKO-TEX® certificate is published on the site.

Most bedding sold as "linen" is a blend — flax cut with cotton, viscose or polyester to bring the cost down. It looks close in a photograph. It doesn't breathe the same, and it doesn't last.

What if I don't like them?

Sleep on them for 100 nights. If they're not for you, send them back and we'll refund you — shipping is free both ways.

We'd only ask one thing: give them ten washes before you decide. Linen on night one and linen after ten washes are two different fabrics — and almost nobody sends them back once they've felt the difference.
